SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) predates REST: strict XML envelopes, a WSDL contract file, built-in standards for security and transactions (WS-*). It's verbose and rigid but rigorous — which is why banking, telecom, and government systems still run it. You'll rarely build new SOAP, but you may need to integrate with it.
