HTML5 codified how browsers already handled real-world (often broken) markup: a defined, forgiving parsing algorithm that always produces a usable page. It added the features developers actually needed (video, canvas, semantics) without demanding perfection. XHTML asked authors to be flawless; HTML5 asked browsers to be resilient — and resilience won the web.
